The name Murphy is the Anglicisation of two Gaelic names, Ó Murchadha and Mac Murchadha, both from the popular personal name ‘Murchadh’ meaning ‘sea warrior’. The Mac Murchadha sept was based in Ulster and was part of the Cineál Eoghain tribal grouping. The Ó Murchadha sept were to be found in three distinct areas; Cork, Roscommon and Wexford. Today, Murphy is the most numerous surname in Ireland, and can be found throughout the country, particularly in counties Wexford, Armagh and Carlow (find out more about the Murphy name).
The hand knit Murphy sweater has a honeycomb central panel, flanked by plait, moss-filled diamonds and moss stitch panels on either side. The honeycomb stitch symbolises work, and the diamonds represent a wish for wealth. This beautiful Aran sweater has been hand knitted in the traditional báinín (pronounced ‘baw neen’) colour, the natural white of the wool. It comes to you complete with a clan history and crest. It is made of 100% pure new wool, is water repellent and breathable. It has been hand crafted in the traditional Irish style, and, with care, will last a lifetime.
Please remember, wool is a natural fibre and has a strong element of flexibility. If your garment feels slightly small at first, give it a gentle stretch which will loosen the fibres in a way that will not damage the garment or cause it to lose its shape.
