Cavanagh, Cavanaugh, Kavanaugh, Ó Caomhánaigh

Ó Caomhánaigh comes from the Gaelic word “Caomhánach”, which means ‘a follower of (St.) Caomhán’. The Kavanaghs are directly descended from Art Mac Murrough, who was King of Leinster in the 12th century. At that time the family owned vast tracts of land in the regions of Co. Carlow and Co. Wexford, which was then known as Kavanagh Country. Kavanagh is currently the 53rd most numerous surname in Ireland.
