This name may be of Gaelic or Norman origin. In Gaelic, Ó Cuillin comes from the word “Cuileann” meaning ‘holly-tree’. The name originated in south-east Leinster, and remains strong there until this day. The Norman name can be derived either from the city of Colwyn in Wales, or the city of Cologne in Germany. The Norman clan’s territories were based around Cullenstown in Co. Wexford. Today, Cullen is the 84th most numerous surname in Ireland.
